## What does each fluid do, and when is it due?

Each fluid has a specific job and its own replacement logic. Some are due by miles, some by time, and some by condition. Your owner manual lists the intervals, and severe driving like heat, towing and stop-and-go traffic often shortens them. This table is a plain overview; your manual is the final word.

Oil viscosity, for example 0W-20 or 5W-30, is set by the maker and printed in the manual and usually on the oil cap, so we fill with that grade instead of a shop default. ## Why do we check fluids before replacing them?

Replacing a fluid that is not due costs you money without adding protection. Skipping one that is overdue costs more later. So we check condition first. Brake fluid can be tested for moisture, and test strips commonly condemn it at about 3 percent water. Coolant can be tested for protection level. Other fluids are judged by color, smell, level and the service history you share with us.

A few things we look for:
- **Low level:** usually means a leak, which matters more than the fluid itself
- **Burnt smell:** heat damage, often in transmission fluid
- **Milky appearance:** water or coolant contamination
- **Metal particles:** internal wear that needs a closer look

If a fluid is fine and not due by the schedule, the estimate says so. If you have receipts from past services, bring them. They help us avoid repeating work.

## How often do engine and cabin air filters need changing?

Engine air filters keep dust out of the engine; cabin filters clean the air you breathe inside the car. Most maintenance schedules put the engine air filter around 15,000 to 30,000 miles and the cabin filter around every 15,000 to 25,000 miles or once a year. Both clog faster in dusty areas, near construction and during fire season, so condition still decides. We pull the filters, show them to you, and replace them when airflow is restricted.

**Engine air filter:** a clogged filter can reduce performance and efficiency on older engines and makes the engine work harder.

**Cabin air filter:** a dirty one weakens airflow from the vents, makes the AC feel less effective, and can cause musty smells.

## Is a flush better than a drain and fill?

It depends on the fluid and the vehicle. A drain and fill replaces part of the fluid and is what many manufacturers specify for some transmissions. A flush or exchange replaces more of the old fluid and is common for brake fluid and coolant. Some systems should not be power-flushed at all. Many newer transmissions have no dipstick either: the level is set through a check plug at a specified fluid temperature, so we follow the procedure the manufacturer lists for your vehicle.

## What color is that leak under your car?

The color, feel and location of a leak tell you which fluid is escaping and how urgent it is. Put a piece of cardboard under the car overnight, then look at the spot in daylight. Brake fluid and heavy coolant leaks need attention before you drive much. Clear water from the AC is usually normal. Bring the cardboard or a photo when you come in.

## How do heat, dust and traffic change fluid and filter schedules?

Hot summers, stop-and-go traffic and dusty air all push fluids and filters toward the severe side of your owner manual. Around here, long idles on Foothill Blvd and in I-10 and SR-210 congestion keep fluids hot, and windy days, nearby construction and smoke seasons load air filters faster. That does not mean replacing everything early. It means checking more often.

### Shortcuts that cause damage
- **Universal fluids in systems that list a specific type.** Many transmissions and steering systems are sensitive to the wrong fluid.

- **Overfilling.** Too much transmission fluid or gear oil can foam and leak from vents.

### Do I really need a fluid flush?

### Do you replace cabin filters?

### Why is one of my fluids low?

### Is my brake fluid low because my pads are worn?

It can be. As pads wear, the caliper pistons move out and the fluid level in the reservoir drops a little. A level that falls quickly, or a soft pedal, points to a leak instead. We check pad thickness and look for leaks before adding fluid.

### How often should I change my engine air filter in dusty weather?
