A 24-hour customer return means you can bring a U-Haul rental back when the shop is closed, then the rental is checked in during business hours. Return steps can differ by rental, so confirm the instructions for your specific rental at pickup. Before you leave it, photograph the fuel gauge, odometer, all four sides and the empty cargo area.
What does a 24-hour customer return mean?
It means your rental does not have to come back during our business hours. Moves run late. Furniture takes longer than planned, a friend shows up an hour behind, or the last load finishes after dark. The 24-hour customer return lets you finish the job without paying for a stress-filled race back to the lot before closing.
The trade-off is simple. When you return after hours, nobody is there to walk around the rental with you. The check-in happens later, during business hours. That is why your own photos matter so much more with an after-hours return than with a daytime return.
Our hours are Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday closed. For Saturday, call (909) 608-7699 to confirm.
Why confirm return instructions at pickup?
Because the right steps depend on your rental, and pickup is when you can ask questions face to face. A truck, a trailer and a tow dolly are not returned the same way, and a one-way rental has a different drop location altogether.
At pickup, ask these questions and write down the answers:
- Is an after-hours return available for this rental?
- Where exactly should the rental be left?
- How are keys and paperwork handled for an after-hours return?
- When is the rental considered returned?
- Who do I call if something goes wrong on the way back?
We would rather answer these at the counter than have you guessing in the dark. We do not publish after-hours steps on this site because they can change by rental.
What should you photograph before leaving the rental?
Take clear photos with your phone before you walk away. Your phone records the time, which gives you a simple record of the condition when you left it. This is the same idea as the walkaround we do at pickup, just done by you.
- Fuel gauge with the ignition on so the needle reads.
- Odometer in the same photo or the next one.
- All four sides of the truck or trailer, far enough back to show the whole panel.
- Cargo area with the door open, showing it swept and empty.
- Cab interior showing no trash or personal items left behind.
- Where you parked it, so the location is clear.
For trailers and dollies, also photograph the coupler, the tires and the ramp or straps stowed. Keep the photos until the rental is fully closed out.
How do you get a rental ready for return?
A clean return starts with the fuel. Refill to the level noted on your paperwork at pickup. Then sweep the cargo box, pull out blankets, tape, zip ties and cardboard, and take your trash with you. Check under the seats and in the door pockets for phones and keys.
Other small things that help:
- Close and latch every door, including the ramp if the truck has one.
- Turn off headlights and interior lights.
- Stow tow dolly straps and ramps the way they came.
- Make sure any damage that happened during your rental is reported, not hidden.
If you are returning the truck in summer, give yourself extra time. Loading in the afternoon heat often runs long, and a late start is the main reason people end up needing an after-hours return.
How do daytime and after-hours returns compare?
Both options end the rental. The difference is who is there when you park and when the paperwork gets finished. This comparison helps you choose on the day.
| Question | Daytime return | After-hours return |
|---|---|---|
| Who checks the rental | Staff, with you standing there | Staff, later, during business hours |
| Fuel and cleanliness | Looked at together | Your photos are the record |
| Questions about the move | Answered on the spot | Wait for business hours |
| Best for | Anything unusual, first-time renters | Late finishes on a normal rental |
| What to confirm at pickup | Our closing time that day | Whether it is offered for your rental, and the steps |
Whether an after-hours return is available, and exactly how it works, is confirmed for your rental when you pick up. Nothing on this page replaces those instructions.
A late-night return checklist
- Fuel topped to the paperwork level before you reach the lot.
- Cargo area swept and empty.
- Photos taken of the gauge, odometer, every side and the cargo area.
- Your belongings out of the cab, glove box and door pockets.
- The instructions from pickup in hand or open on your phone.
When should you call instead of returning after hours?
Call first if anything unusual happened during your rental. After-hours returns work well for normal rentals. They are a poor fit when there is something we need to talk through with you.
Call (909) 608-7699 during business hours if:
- The truck or trailer was damaged, even slightly.
- A warning light came on, a tire went low, or a light stopped working.
- You were in any kind of collision.
- You need to extend the rental or change the return date.
- You are not sure you can return it to the right place.
Talking it through first keeps the paperwork accurate and avoids surprises when the rental is checked in. For general rental questions, our U-Haul FAQs page covers the most common ones, and the reserve page explains what to set up in advance.
Is a daytime return still better when you can make it?
If your schedule allows it, yes. A daytime return means we walk around the rental with you, check fuel and cleanliness together and close out your contract on the spot. You leave with a clear answer instead of waiting for a later check-in.
A daytime return also gives you a chance to ask about anything that came up on your move. If your own car pulled while towing, or a tire looked low on the trip, we can look at it while you are here. Our free towing inspection page explains what we check on tow vehicles, and our hours and directions page has the current schedule.
