6x12 Utility Trailer for Big Projects and Long Materials

Projects where the materials are long, wide or plentiful. A pickup bed is short, and a smaller trailer means many trips. The 6x12 lets you move a real project load in fewer runs.

Typical 6x12 jobs:

The 6x12 deck is wide and long enough for full sheets to lie flat, which the smaller trailers typically cannot manage. We confirm current deck dimensions when you call.

• Sheets: lay them flat, stack evenly and strap them down in two or more places. Wind can lift the top sheet.
• Long boards: load them straight, centered and bundled. Keep weight balanced ahead of the axle.
• Overhang: avoid long overhangs past the back of the trailer. If something must stick out, mark it clearly with a flag as required and keep it within legal limits.
• Strapping: use at least two straps across each bundle, pulled tight to the tie-down points.

Drywall is heavy and breaks easily when wet. Watch the forecast and cover it.

A loaded 6x12 open trailer is heavy, especially with drywall, pavers or wet lumber. It typically needs a pickup or larger SUV with a receiver hitch and working trailer lights. U-Haul sets the requirements, and we check your vehicle when you call.

Before you load:

• Confirm your vehicle's towing rating covers the loaded trailer.
• Check tire pressure against the door placard, including any load setting.
• Make sure your brakes are in good shape.

A big deck invites overloading. It is easy to keep stacking because there is room left, even when the trailer is already near its limit. Plan the weight, not just the space.

1. Ask for the current load capacity when you call.
2. Add up your materials before you buy or load.
3. Place the heaviest items slightly ahead of the axle.
4. Keep the load even from side to side.
5. Split into two trips if the numbers are close.

Look at your vehicle from the side once loaded. The rear should not sag heavily.

The trailer adds a lot of length, and long materials make the rig longer still. Turns, lane changes and parking all take more room. Wind can also lift lightly strapped sheets.

• Swing wide on right turns.
• Keep speeds moderate, especially with sheet goods.
• Leave extra stopping distance.
• Check straps at your first stop and every stop after.
• Choose parking at store lots where you can pull through.

Many home improvement store lots are tight. Park at the edge and walk in.

With a trailer this long, the rig can stretch well past the length of a normal parking space. Plan store stops accordingly.

Long materials and a long trailer bring two risks: loads sticking out the back, and sway at speed.

Overhang

California requires a red flag on a load that extends four feet or more past the rear, and lights on it after dark. Keep overhang short, tie the ends so they cannot bounce, and never let material stick out the sides.

Sway

Sway usually comes from too little weight on the tongue, a crosswind or a sudden steering move. If the trailer starts to sway:

1. Ease off the gas smoothly.
2. Hold the steering wheel straight.
3. Do not slam the brakes.
4. Pull over once it settles and move weight forward.
