4x7 Utility Trailer Rental for Light Errands

The 4x7 is for small, messy or awkward loads you do not want inside your car. It is light, easy to tow and simple to park, which makes it a good first trailer for someone who has never towed.

Typical 4x7 jobs:

• Garden center runs: bags of mulch, soil, a few plants
• Home improvement store trips: short boards, a toilet, a vanity, boxed items
• Bikes and sports gear for a weekend trip
• A single piece of furniture in dry weather, strapped and padded
• A few bags of green waste headed for disposal

For a full yard cleanup, the 5x8 utility trailer gives you more room.

The deck is roughly four feet wide and seven feet long, and the usable space is a bit smaller once you account for the rails. We confirm current dimensions when you call.

Keep in mind:

• Full four by eight sheets of plywood or drywall typically will not lie flat inside the rails. They would need to ride at an angle or overhang, which is not ideal.
• Short lumber fits well, but long boards will stick out past the back.
• Tall items catch wind, so strap them low.

Yes. It is small and light, so it affects your vehicle less than larger trailers. But it still needs the same basics as any trailer, and it can be harder to see when backing because it hides behind your vehicle.

First-time towing tips:

1. Practice in an empty lot before your errand.
2. Take turns a little wider than normal.
3. Leave extra distance to the car in front.
4. When backing, put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and move it the direction you want the trailer to go.
5. Use a spotter until you get the feel.

A proper hitch, the right ball size, safety chain attachment points and working trailer lights. Many cars and crossovers can tow a trailer this size, but U-Haul sets the requirements, and we check your vehicle when you call.

If your car does not have a hitch yet, read the hitch and tow package page first. Light wiring is often the missing piece on smaller cars, and we test it with the trailer connected at pickup.

Small loads shift and blow away just as easily as big ones. Strap everything and cover anything loose.

• Put heavy bags on the deck floor, spread evenly.
• Strap boxed items and furniture to the tie-down points.
• Cover loose soil or leaves with a tarp and tie it tight.
• Pad furniture so straps do not scratch it.
• Remove empty pots, wrappers and anything that can catch wind.

Stop after a few blocks and check the straps. They often need a second tightening once the load settles.

Call ahead with your date and vehicle, pick up during business hours, and plan your stops in order. Short rentals go smoothly when the route is simple.

Our hours are Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, Sunday closed. For Saturday, call to confirm. At pickup, we connect the trailer, check the hitch and lights, and walk around it with you. The 4x7 is typically the lightest open trailer on the lot, which is why it pairs with smaller vehicles. The numbers below are general guidance only. U-Haul equipment changes over time, so we confirm the current specs for the exact trailer when you call.

Because the trailer is light, the load you put on it makes up much of the total weight. Two hundred pounds of soil changes how it tows far more than it would on a big trailer.

Many compact cars and crossovers leave the factory with no trailer wiring at all, even when a hitch was added later. Without a working plug, the trailer has no brake lights or turn signals, and that is not safe or legal to tow.

What we usually find on smaller cars:

• No connector: a hitch was installed but the wiring never was.
• An unused plug: pins corroded from years of sitting under the bumper.
• A converter issue: many newer cars need a powered wiring module to run trailer lights, and a blown fuse stops it working.
• Loose ground: one side lights, the other stays dark.
