5x8 Utility Trailer for Yard Cleanups and Dump Runs

It is big enough to take a real pile, small enough for many SUVs and pickups to tow, and open so you can throw branches over the side. For a weekend of trimming trees, pulling out an old fence or clearing a side yard, it is usually the right size.

Typical 5x8 cleanup loads:

• Tree and shrub trimmings
• Old fence boards and posts
• A broken patio set or old shed panels
• Bagged leaves and grass
• Garage junk headed for disposal

If you have a mower or other wheeled equipment to move, the 5x9 utility trailer with ramp is easier to load.

Green waste is bulky and springy. Loaded carelessly, it takes three times the space it should. A few tricks pack more into each trip.

1. Cut branches short: shorter pieces stack flatter.
2. Lay the big ones first: long branches along the deck, all pointing the same way.
3. Fill the gaps: smaller trimmings on top and in the spaces.
4. Press it down: step on the pile carefully or lay boards on top to compress it.
5. Cover it: a tarp or cargo net over the top, tied to the tie-down points.

Keep the pile at or below the rails where possible. A tall pile catches wind and can shed debris on the road.

You can haul some, but be careful. Dirt, gravel, rock and broken concrete are very heavy. A small pile can reach the trailer's load limit long before the deck looks full. Overloading can damage the trailer and make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

• Ask us the current load capacity when you call.
• Load heavy material in smaller amounts per trip.
• Spread it evenly and slightly ahead of the axle.
• Check that your vehicle is rated for the loaded weight.

Bagged material is easier to control. If you are moving loose dirt for a big project, tell us, and we can talk through whether a different trailer or more trips make sense.

Check the disposal site's rules before you load. Many sites sort green waste, construction debris, metal and household junk separately, and some items are not accepted at all. Loading in the order you will unload saves time.

• Separate green waste from other junk.
• Put items for the first drop-off on top or at the back.
• Do not include paint, chemicals, tires or electronics unless the site accepts them.
• Cover the load for the drive.
• Bring gloves and a rake or shovel to clear the deck.

After the run, sweep the deck before returning the trailer.

We connect the trailer to your vehicle and check the receiver, pin, ball size, coupler latch, safety chains and lights. We walk around the trailer with you to note its tires, deck and lights.

Empty, swept and free of leaves and dirt. Yard jobs leave debris in corners and along the rails, so give it a good sweep or a hose-off before you return. Remove your straps and tarps.

The 5x8 sits in the middle of the open trailer lineup: wider and longer than the 4x7, lighter and shorter than the 6x12. The figures below are typical guidance. We confirm current specs, including load capacity, for the trailer you reserve when you call.

Loose soil and rock fill the weight limit long before they fill the deck, so treat the deck size as a volume guide for light, bulky material only.

Cleanup work in the foothills follows the seasons. Knowing the season helps you plan the trip count and what to bring.

• Late spring brush clearance: many foothill neighborhoods clear dry brush and weeds before fire season. That material is light but bulky, so compress it and tarp it well.
• After winter storms: fallen limbs and broken fence panels are heavy and awkward. Cut limbs into short lengths before loading.
• Fall leaf and palm frond cleanup: fronds are long and sharp. Lay them flat, all one direction, and wear gloves.
• Move-out and garage cleanouts: mixed junk goes faster if you sort it by drop-off site as you load.
