5x8 Cargo Trailer with Ramp for Appliances and Mowers

Lifting a washer or refrigerator into a trailer is where backs get hurt and appliances get dropped. A ramp turns a lift into a controlled roll. One person guides from above, one steadies from below, and the heavy item never leaves the ground.

A ramp trailer is the right tool when your load includes:

• Appliances: washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers and ranges.
• Mowers: push mowers and small riding mowers you want covered and locked.
• Wheeled equipment: pressure washers, generators, tool chests on casters.
• Heavy furniture on a dolly: gun safes (within limits), filing cabinets, pianos on a proper dolly.

If your load is mostly boxes, the standard 5x8 cargo trailer is enough.

Ramp trailers are usually rented for a few heavy pieces rather than a whole apartment. This table shows typical combinations. It is a rough guide, and we confirm current interior size and load capacity when you call.

Two heavy appliances can reach the capacity faster than you would guess, so give us the full list.

Because a heavy item rolling up the ramp shifts weight fast. An unhitched trailer can tip back onto its rear, lifting the tongue into the air. That can injure the person on the ramp and damage the trailer.

Always follow this order:

1. Connect the trailer to your vehicle and latch the coupler.
2. Set your vehicle's parking brake and put it in park.
3. Lower the ramp onto flat, firm ground.
4. Roll the item up slowly and position it.
5. Strap it before bringing the next item.

Set the scene before anyone lifts. Most ramp accidents come from a rushed setup, not from the load itself.

• Flat ground: level pavement rather than a sloped driveway, when you have the choice.
• Hitched and braked: trailer coupled, vehicle in park with the parking brake set.
• Ramp seated: the end flat on the ground with no gap or wobble.
• Clear path: no hoses, cords or loose gravel between the door and the ramp.
• Right dolly: an appliance dolly with a strap, not a basic hand truck.
• Two people: one above guiding, one below steadying, nobody on the downhill side.
• Gloves and closed shoes for grip.

Keep appliances upright, strapped and forward. Most appliances ride best standing up, and they are heavy enough to shift if not secured.

• Refrigerators: use an appliance dolly with a strap, keep upright, tape the doors shut.
• Washers: secure the drum if your model calls for it, drain hoses first.
• Dryers: disconnect and cap gas lines properly before moving a gas dryer.
• Placement: heaviest appliance against the front wall, centered.
• Straps: run straps around each appliance to the tie-downs.

Two appliances usually fit side by side at the front with room for boxes behind. We confirm the current interior width when you call.

Mowers bring fuel and oil, so prep them before they go into an enclosed space. Fuel fumes in a closed trailer on a hot day are a real hazard.

1. Run the mower until the tank is nearly empty, or drain it safely.
2. Let the engine cool completely.
3. Roll it up the ramp slowly, pushing from behind a push mower.
4. For a riding mower, drive it up only if the ramp and your experience allow. Otherwise winch or push with help.
5. Set the parking brake on a riding mower and chock the wheels.
6. Strap it to the tie-downs from both sides.

Never transport gas cans or fuel containers in the enclosed trailer. If you are moving a whole yard of equipment, an open 5x9 utility trailer with ramp may be the better tool.

Every trailer has a maximum load, and heavy items add up fast. Two appliances and a riding mower can approach limits that a box load never would. We confirm the current load capacity when you call.

Also think about your tow vehicle. A heavy trailer puts more weight on your hitch and rear tires. Check that your vehicle is rated for the loaded trailer, and keep tongue weight in a sensible range. The free towing inspection page explains how.

If you are unsure, tell us exactly what you plan to load. We would rather suggest a larger trailer than have you overloaded on the freeway.

Heavy loads work your rear tires and your brakes harder than boxes do. Because we are a tire and repair shop, we can check both in the same visit as your pickup. We look at tire tread, age, pressure and load capacity, plus brake pad thickness.
