One-Way U‑Haul Rentals for Moves Out of the Area

You pick up here and drop off somewhere else. The drop-off location and the number of days allowed are set when the reservation is made, based on where you are going. Because the equipment is not coming back to this lot, the pickup walkaround is the only time we see it with you.

One-way rentals are priced and scheduled differently from in-town rentals. We do not publish rates on this site. When you call, we explain the terms for your trip, including the time and distance your rental allows. Read the contract at pickup and ask about anything that is not clear.

Moving only a few miles? An in-town rental is usually the right fit instead.

The more specific you are, the smoother the pickup. Before you call, have these answers ready.

• Destination: the city and state you are moving to.
• Departure date: the day you want to pick up.
• Travel time: how many days you expect the drive to take, including stops.
• The load: rooms and big items, so we can suggest the right truck.
• A towed car: if you plan to bring one, its year, make, model and drive type.

Everything you would want to prove later, because the return happens hundreds of miles from here. The people checking the truck in at your destination did not see it leave our lot. Your photos are the bridge between the two ends.

Take these at pickup, after the walkaround:

1. Fuel gauge and odometer with the ignition on.
2. Each side of the truck, the front and the back.
3. Close-ups of any existing dents, scrapes or cracked lenses we noted together.
4. The cargo area, empty and clean.
5. Tires, including the inside duals on larger trucks if you can see them.
6. Your paperwork, so you have the drop-off details on your phone.

Do the same set again at drop-off. It takes a few minutes and settles most disputes before they start.

Drive it like the heavy vehicle it is. A loaded truck takes longer to stop, leans more in turns and climbs slowly. Leaving Southern California often means long grades, such as the Cajon Pass on the I-15 or the climb east on the I-10. Keep a steady pace in the right lanes, and use a lower gear on long descents instead of riding the brakes.

Practical tips for the road:

• Fuel: larger trucks have a smaller range than your car. Refuel early rather than late.
• Height: watch drive-throughs, parking garages and low hotel canopies.
• Heat: in summer, check gauges on long climbs and pull over if anything looks wrong.
• Rest: plan real breaks. Driving a truck is more tiring than a car.

If a warning light comes on or a tire looks low, stop somewhere safe and use the roadside contact information on your paperwork.

Yes, many one-way movers bring a car along on a tow dolly or an auto transport behind the truck. The right choice depends on the car. Tow dollies lift only the front wheels, so they usually suit front-wheel-drive cars. All-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive and many rear-wheel-drive vehicles usually belong on an auto transport.

A one-way move has more moving parts than a local one, so work backward from your arrival date. This is a typical sequence, not a rule. Adjust it to your own dates.

Timing can shift with availability. Equipment and drop-off details are confirmed when you call and again at pickup.

The costly ones happen before the truck leaves the lot, and all of them are avoidable.

• Booking too small. There is no quick second trip from another state.
• Forgetting the towed car's drive type. An all-wheel-drive car on the wrong equipment is a real problem. Tell us before pickup.
• Skipping photos. The destination team never saw the truck here.
• Packing documents in the box. Keep IDs, leases and medication in the cab.
• Guessing the drop-off. Read it from your paperwork, not from memory.

Handle car care before the move, not in a strange city. If you are driving your own vehicle separately, or towing with it, a quick check of tires, brakes and fluids is worth doing while you are close to home.
